Harold Halse 1907-1912 125 games 56 goals

Harold Halse joined the club towards the end of the 1907-08 championship winning campaign and also scored in the first minute of his debut. Although he was never the most blindingly skilful of players, there was no doubting Halse’s prowess in front of goal. He had demonstrated his ability to hit the target from most angles players wouldn’t even consider taken a shot from, he scored more than 200 goals for Soouthend United, in his two seasons there, He managed 14 goals in his first season at United. which ended in a 1-0 win in the FA Cup final, Sandy Turnbull scored the goal after Halse’s shot had rebounded off the cross-bar. en-route to the final, Halse had scored 4 times, including the only goal of the semi-final game against Newcastle United. This earned him a call up to the England team where he earned is one and only international cap in a game against Austria, Halse scored twice during the game.
In 1911, he helped United to another League Championship, scoring two goals in the crucial 5-1 win over Sunderland in the last match of the season. In the Charity Shield Halse set an all time record for the most goals scored in a match which still stands today, he rattled in a remarkable 6 goals in a row as United beat Swindon Town 8-4. He joined Aston Villa for £1,200 in 1912 where he went on to win the FA Cup in 1913
