Clarance Hilditch joined United from Altrincham but because of World War 1 he commenced his Manchester United career in the Regional Wartime League, and had to wait untill 30th August, 1919 to make his first official appearence for the club. Hilditch established himself at the half-back position, having previously played as an inside-forward for Witton Albion and Altrincham. He was known to be a gentleman on the pitch and off it as he would very rarely commit fouls, which was unusual for a player in the center of the pitch.
Hilditch was part of the team that got relegated in the 1921-1922 season, he was limited to just 4 games in the 1924-1925 season due to an injury, it was also the season which United gained promotion back to the top flight,
Lal holds a unique part or United’s history as he was appointed player manager during 1926-1927 season, he held the position from October 1926 untill Herbert Bamlett took control of the managerial duties in April 1927, Hilditch remaind at the club as a player for four more seasons,
He made the last of his 322 games for United on 30th January, 1932 at the ripe old age of 36, Sadly for the career of Hilditch he never won a winners medal at United.
